Five Steps To Take After an Accident
Our attorneys fight for your rights
None of us expect to get into a car accident. But a crash can happen in an instant. It's normal to feel confused in the moments following the crash about what just happened. Many people aren't sure what to do next. It's important to take certain steps to protect your health and also your right to financial compensation.
The Law Offices of Adam M. Kotlar, LLC recommends taking these steps immediately following a car accident:
Call the police.
Do this even if your accident seems minor. A police officer will talk to everyone involved as well as any witnesses and document the accident. This can help establish negligence on the part of the other driver - for example, if the driver had been drinking or was driving recklessly.
Get medical attention.
Immediately following your accident, you may feel OK. Get a medical exam anyway. Some injuries have delayed symptoms, or you could have internal injuries. And if you are hurt, a medical professional can provide documentation.
If you are able to, ask for the contact information of other driver, passengers and witnesses. But don't talk about what happened or admit any responsibility for the crash. Take photos of the accident scene, including damage to the vehicles, plate numbers and any street signs or traffic signals.
Call a car accident attorney.
It may not seem as if you need a lawyer. But even minor car crashes can quickly become very complicated, and it's important to know your rights. An attorney can explain your options and answer your questions about how to proceed.
Contact your insurance company.
Let them know that you were in an accident. But don't answer any questions or make any statements about your crash. The insurance company may later try to use what you say against you to try to limit your compensation.
A car accident can leave you seriously injured, with mounting medical bills. And if your injuries leave you unable to work, there is less money coming in. This is a difficult situation to be in, and insurance companies often aren't much help. They do what they can to pay you as little as possible. They may even blame you for what happened.
